What is FMEA?
FMEA or Failure Mode and Effects Analysis is a preventive methodology that helps to identify, evaluate and prioritize actions that reduce or eliminate potential risks in a process or product. Each possible failure mode is classified by the combination of Severity (S), Occurrence (O) and Detection (D), the product of which results in the Risk Priority Number (RPN).
The FMEA is developed collaboratively between different departments and is set out in a standardized form. It is also reviewed periodically to keep it effective and up to date.
From standard FMEA to harmonized FMEA
The Harmonized FMEA (AIAG-VDA) is the result of collaboration between AIAG (USA) and VDA (Germany) to unify criteria and ensure a coherent global approach.
This method replaces the NPR by the Priority of Action (High / Medium / Low) and works in seven guided steps, from the definition of the context to the validation of actions.
Its objective is to achieve greater homogeneity, traceability and technical justification in decision making, especially in international supply chains or regulated sectors.
For years, many plants have relied on the standard FMEA (AIAG 4th ed.) for its simplicity and speed. However, global environments and traceability requirements have made the harmonized FMEA (AIAG-VDA) gain momentum.
But beyond meeting a requirement, what are the real benefits of making the leap?

What changes with standards
Currently, all new FMEAs must be created in a harmonized format (AIAG-VDA).
However, with existing FMEAs it is recommended to transition when revisions, process updates or product changes are made to maintain document consistency and take advantage of the new approach.

Evolving to harmonized is not a challenge
The transition can be gradual and controlled. It is recommended to do so as soon as existing FMEAs are reviewed. Some recommended steps:
- Apply the harmonized method in a representative pilot to adjust criteria and times.
- Update review criteria in the event of product, process or supplier changes.
- Digitize FMEA management to avoid document overload and facilitate traceability.

To conclude
Today, the transition to the harmonized FMEA (AIAG-VDA) is not so much a choice, but a necessity imposed by customer requirements.
Large corporate groups and regulated industries (automotive, aerospace, medical) already require it as a standard to ensure common ground between plants and suppliers.
In addition, the harmonized approach simplifies long-term management:
- Unify global criteria without the need to adapt formats between regions or clients.
- Facilitates audits and approvals by following a single internationally recognized language.
- It reduces the ambiguity of the NPR, allowing for clearer and more defensible prioritization.
In practice, moving to the harmonized FMEA not only avoids constant adaptations, but also improves consistency and traceability within the entire supply chain.
